Best job ever? Weather forecaster in San Diego. One reason, we almost never have any real weather to speak of and when we do, forecasting it correctly does not seem to be a requirement. As a matter of fact, a favorite morning news show quote came from the mouth of one such forecaster who after a week of banging the, “It’s going to rain” gong, finally admitted, “I wouldn’t believe me either” after not one drop fell. There’s something to be said for honesty, if not for accuracy.
I cannot even begin to tell you how excited the local weather dudes and dudettes get at the mere thought of precipitation. For those of you who live in the South, it is very similar to what happens when snow is predicted there. And it isn’t just the people who report the weather for a living who get fired up. The kids here go nuts when it rains. They run outside without umbrellas, dance in puddles and generally try in every way imaginable to get as wet as they can. I didn’t understand what the fuss was about when I witnessed this behavior the first time. Almost six years later, I must admit that I do.
So yes, we are on storm watch here in San Diego and it does indeed appear that something wet might actually fall from the sky this time. And in celebration, I have decided to share a favorite song of mine from the Violent Femmes.
